Background of the Study
Memes have emerged as powerful vehicles of linguistic innovation, rapidly disseminating new expressions and modifying language use. This study examines Twitter memes in Nigeria to explore their impact on linguistic innovation. Nigerian Twitter memes often blend humor, irony, and social commentary, resulting in creative wordplay, neologisms, and altered syntactic structures (Ibekwe, 2023). The compact nature of memes forces users to convey complex ideas in a few words, thereby accelerating the evolution of language. Memes act as catalysts for the development of informal language norms, influencing everyday speech and cultural narratives. As these visual and textual artifacts gain popularity, they contribute to a dynamic process of linguistic change that reflects broader social and technological trends. This study investigates the strategies employed in meme creation, the resultant linguistic innovations, and their propagation across digital communities, offering insights into how social media fosters a culture of rapid language evolution (Oluwaseun, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Although Twitter memes are widely recognized as agents of linguistic innovation in Nigeria, there is limited research on their specific impact on language change. The creative mechanisms and rapid diffusion of meme‑based expressions are not well documented, creating a gap in understanding the role of digital humor in language evolution. This study addresses the need for a systematic analysis of meme language, its underlying innovation processes, and its broader cultural implications (Adeniyi, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  • To analyze linguistic innovations arising from Nigerian Twitter memes.

  • To identify creative strategies used in meme construction.

  • To assess the cultural impact of meme‑driven language change.

Research Questions

  • What linguistic innovations are evident in Nigerian Twitter memes?

  • How do meme creators use language creatively to convey messages?

  • What impact do these innovations have on everyday language use?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the transformative role of Twitter memes in driving linguistic innovation in Nigeria. The insights will contribute to our understanding of digital language evolution and provide practical implications for linguists and cultural analysts studying contemporary communication trends (Chukwu, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
Limited to the topic only.
